Category: Bladeless LASIK Equivalent to Standard (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A new study reveals equal results from both femtosecond (bladeless) and mechanical microkeratome LASIK surgeries six months after the procedure. LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) treats nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. Standard LASIK uses a blade and laser; bladeless LASIK is newer and uses a femtosecond laser and no blade.
Study researcher Sanjay Patel, M.D., a Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist, says he slightly prefers bladeless LASIK because it may be safer -- something that was not measured in this study.
"I'd say the short-term outcomes are equal and the risks are, in theory, less with the bladeless technique, although our study was not designed to compare risks," Patel reports. "Bladeless LASIK is potentially safer because of its computer-controlled precision, the ability to visualize the flap being created, and to stop the procedure whenever necessary."
