Fast-Growing Wireless Subscriber Rate In Asia-Pacific Region

Fast-Growing Wireless Subscriber Rate In Asia-Pacific Region

August 02, 2005 -- NEW YORK, NY – The wireless subscriber population in the Asia Pacific region is growing fast, and nearing one billion users according to some estimates. This makes it by far the largest wireless subscriber population in the world, dwarfing Europe and the Americas combined.

China is home to an enormous and still-expanding user population that dwarfs subscriber bases elsewhere in the world. Steep growth lies ahead for India as well, and by the end of the decade, it will also develop into a major force in the region. Mobile phone users pondering the future of wireless need only look to Japan and South Korea. These vanguards of mobile phone service will soon be joined by Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

That's among the findings in eMarketer's new report, Asia-Pacific Wireless: Mobility on the Cutting Edge, released today. The Asia-Pacific region often epitomizes the cutting edge in wireless networks, applications, services and usage. Yet it also exemplifies deep contrasts—with the 100+% wireless penetration of Taiwan and Hong Kong offset by less than 6% penetration of India. But as advanced wireless markets reach saturation, operators are courting subscribers in the region's vast low-end market.

"Asia-Pacific's share will only increase over the next five years, primarily at the expense of Western Europe, where most markets have reached or are close to saturation," says eMarketer Senior Analyst Noah Elkin. "This share of the market will be spurred by massive subscriber growth in these highly populous countries—and Indonesia and the Philippines—all of which are characterized by large pent-up demand for telecommunications services."

Key questions the "Asia-Pacific Wireless" report addresses:
-What direction is the market taking in terms of subscriber and revenue growth?
-In what ways is the Asia-Pacific region a trendsetter with regard to implementation of next-generation wireless networks?
-How successful have operators been in converting existing users to 3G platforms?
-What factors will drive Asia-Pacific's wireless sector over the next few years?
-And much more…

The Asia-Pacific Wireless Report aggregates the latest data from leading researchers — EIU, IDC, Ipsos-Insight, Juniper, NTT DoCoMo, Pyramid Research, TCA, Yankee Group and others — with eMarketer's objective, unbiased analysis to give you the up-to-date information you need to make well-informed business decisions in this vast, complex but opportunity-filled market.
