IP3 Networks Delivers Seamless Wireless Access Provisioning for City of Tempe Metro Wi-Fi Network

... have been selected for use in Tempe, Arizona's Wi-Fi deployment -- the first major metropolis in the United States to deploy citywide wireless Internet access. ...

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 2005--Continuing to establish its leadership position as a premier provider of metro-scale access-control solutions for broadband networks, IP3 Networks announced that its NetAccess gateways have been selected for use in Tempe, Arizona's Wi-Fi deployment -- the first major metropolis in the United States to deploy citywide wireless Internet access.

IP3 is partnering with Strix Systems, provider of the Access/One Network Outdoor Wireless System (OWS), and MobilePro, a wireless technology and broadband telecommunications company, which is delivering the network branded "WazTempe." The grid will cover the 40-square-mile radius of Tempe, and will offer services to residents and visitors on an annual, monthly, daily or hourly basis. The network will allow access to multiple Internet service providers (ISP), and is robust enough to provide telephone service via Voice-over-IP (VOIP).

With this robust, always-on system that will serve all types of users, Tempe has positioned itself as an international showcase for wireless networking technology. "Tempe has set the bar for other cities who have been and will be considering large-scale wireless access for their communities, and we expect a number of city governments and IT departments to be encouraged by our success," said Stephen Rizzone, CEO of IP3 Networks.

According to Rizzone, any Wi-Fi enabled device will be able to access the service by logging on to the network's registration page, which is enabled by IP3's NetAccess gateway. IP3's patented Multi-Layer Portal technology (MLPT) enabled the City of Tempe to create a "Double-Duty Network" that supports for two parallel uses of the Wi-Fi Infrastructure; a Public Services Network that is open to the public, and a Public Safety Network that is protected and private for secure City Government use. For example, the NetAccess gateway applies group policies that will ensure Wi-Fi access to residents while every police car and fire truck in the city -- each of which will be equipped with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop -- will have an always-on connection to a private, secure network.

"The opportunity for local businesses, government, private citizens, ASU students and visitors to Tempe to experience the benefits of IP3 NetAccess technology continues the drive of our 'Multi-Layer Portal' technology toward becoming an industry standard," said Rizzone.

IP3's NetAccess gateways are deployed by service providers and enterprises to manage and control users' broadband access in places such as metro areas, campuses, hospitals, airports, convention centers, hotels, offices, and meeting rooms. NetAccess gateways enable users to self-provision QoS, security level, billing type, and conditions of usage to fit their needs. This capability is easy to use and understand and requires zero device configuration from the user.

The solution is clientless, making it operating system independent. NetAccess is unique in the way network administrators can setup multiple group policies for bandwidth control, billing and location-based content delivery using a single network infrastructure. NetAccess units are network appliances, with no hard disks to fail, ensuring reliability and built on an embedded Linux operating system, so development cycles are rapid. A centralized management system allows the NetAccess solution to scale extremely well, and load-sharing and fail-over features make it ideal for mission critical deployments.
