LAUREL, Md., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless has named Timothy Dykstra director of network performance for the company's Washington/Baltimore/Virginia Region. In his new role, Dykstra is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the regional network for the nation's most reliable wireless provider.

Dykstra joined Verizon Wireless in 2001 as a manager for design and system performance, where he was responsible for managing the design of new cell sites and the redesign of the existing network to improve performance and increase capacity. Before joining Verizon Wireless, Dykstra had a long tenure with Verizon Wireless' predecessor company, Bell Atlantic Mobile. He is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey with a degree in electrical engineering.

"Tim's strong leadership and technical expertise is invaluable both in our region and across the company," said Patrick Devlin, Verizon Wireless regional president. "As the nation's most reliable wireless provider, Verizon Wireless is committed to delivering the very best network, and Tim Dykstra's hard work is one reason we're able to do that."

Dykstra is one of the individuals responsible for managing and implementing Verizon Wireless' aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for voice and data services.

Nationwide, Verizon Wireless invests $4 billion-plus annually to offer customers the most extensive wireless voice and data network in the United States. The network is built for reliability in emergencies -- like power blackouts and storms -- with redundancies in place to maintain services for customers when they need it most. In the Washington/Baltimore/Virginia region, Verizon Wireless' network investment has exceeded $1 billion over the past five years, including $260 million in network upgrades in 2004 alone. This multi-million dollar investment included updating transmission sites and other technology to improve call quality, increase coverage areas and allow a variety of advanced services such as wireless broadband computing, text, picture messaging, video messaging and other applications.

These network upgrades are also evidence of Verizon Wireless' commitment to continue to offer customers the most reliable service available on the nation's best wireless voice and data network. The company's 'most reliable network' claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women who inspired the company's national advertising campaign. Nationwide, engineers make more than 300,000 call attempts monthly on Verizon Wireless' and other national wireless carriers' networks while traveling over 100,000 miles of the country's most frequently traveled roadways in specially equipped, company-owned quality test vehicles.
